Reservation of donor semen
Parents who have given birth to a child as a result of artificial insemination with donor semen will often later in life want to have more children. The question is then whether it is possible to receive semen from the same donor. Often this is not possible, because the particular donor will be "sold out" by that time.
In order to avoid this situation, it is recommended that the patient takes contact directly to Cryos a.s.a.p. after the pregnancy has been confirmed and asks for a reservation of an individual number of units (straws) from the donor.
The benefits of using the same donor for future pregnancies are obvious:
- The children will be 100% genetically related and therefore have the best chance of having similar features.
- The donor was successful. You became pregnant by use of this particular donor. Not all donors and recipients will "match" biologically together and result in a pregnancy.
- You will know what to expect.
- Some children might develop identity problems later in life if they are told about the donor insemination. It might, however, help them if they are 100% genetically related to their brothers or sisters.
What do I do?
1. Ask your clinic which donor number was used.
2. Contact Cryos directly and ask for availability of the particular donor.
3. Make a reservation of a certain number of units.
Normally, it is recommended that at least 6 x MOT40, 12 x MOT20, 24 x MOT10 or 48 x MOT5 straws - eventually 12 x IUI-MOT5, 6 x IUI-MOT10 or IUI-MOT20 straws are reserved. Read more about the meaning of MOT and recommended amount and quality. These numbers corresponds to the average consumption of straws per pregnancy. If you wish to have a higher pregnancy chance than "the average", you should reserve more straws. But if you were treated by IVF or if you became pregnant very easily the first time, you may reserve less straws, and vice versa. If you cannot afford to reserve the recommended number of straws, some straws are better than none. Even though it is very difficult to do so, you should also consider whether you want more than one more child in the future. If you want five children the above recommended number of straws are certainly not enough. You can always contact Cryos for guidance and discussion concerning this question.
Should the actual donor be sold out you can be registered on a waiting list. Then you will be contacted if there is later sperm free of quarantine or if other with a reservation expire. For the moment hundreds of people are registered on the waiting list which is a clear signal that it is a good idea to make reservation in due time.

There is no VAT on donor semen.
When we know the numbers and quality of units to be reserved we will open a deposit in your name, and the units reserved are placed in an individual deposit tank with liquid nitrogen. The tank is always monitored by an alarm system connected to a security company.
The invoice and the reservation contract will be sent to you for your signature. Our name will not be printed on any confidential letters, and if you want the letters to be sent as registered post, there will be an extra fee.
As soon as we have received a signed contract and when the payment has been made, we will send you a confirmation.
When you need the reserved semen you must fill in a Declaration Form which allows us to send the semen to a clinic of your choice.
The patient will pay the full price for the units, but at the time of cancellation of the reservation agreement, the patient will be repaid 90% for Cryos-units still deposited at Cryos and not delivered.
